Flat Posts & Sleepers
Flat posts and sleepers can be used for walls that are less than 600mm high. With the flat posts it gives the sleeper wall a unified look and they are one of the least expensive of the timber walls to build.
Round Posts & Wing Splits
Round posts and wing splits have been used for quite some time these walls are effective for heights under 1m or less these timbers are light and easy to handle with the correct drainage behind these walls they will last 20 years plus.
Round Posts & Slabs
Round posts and slabs are the bigger stronger brother of the wing split wall and are best suited to walls over 1.4 meters high and in my opinion the most decorative and strongest, and the wall of choice for longevity but it does come with the highest price tag of all the timber walls. The reason for this is the use of the centre of the tree as the horizontals and they are also machined flat on both sides to make them true and flat so they sit together like a sleeper so essentially I use small posts as the horizontals to give the wall strength and a clean uniformed look
Reinforced Besser Block Retaining Walls
All of the Besser Block walls that are talked about following are all built with aggline and drainage gravel to within 300mm of the top of the wall. Correct drainage is very important to stop the hydrostatic pressure building up and the wall is correctly water proofed at the rear of the wall.
In my opinion this wall is the strongest wall that can be built today if the this wall can be uses and suits the surrounding area that it will reside in and the budget allows this would be my choice of wall to use because of how it performs. i.e. its built vertically (does not lean back) on most projects its foot print only takes up 200mm in width so it maximizes the area that you are trying to retain, it can be built many meters high, it can be painted, bagged with color and rendered and painted to give it a very modern look.
This wall can also come in a decretive split face block motored and mortar less.
The key to the longevity of these walls is the use of a genuine H configuration Besser Block with agitation to ensure that the concrete core fill settles down to the very bottom of the wall to ensure that the steal starter bars and all the extra horizontal and vertical steel is incased in concrete so as to cut the air and moisture from getting to the steel thus preserving the integrity of the steel and thus the wall lasting a lifetime.
All Besser Block wall are all essentially the same with just the size of the footing and steel being increased depending on the height and load of the wall in question the main difference.
The more modern look for a Besser Block wall is the mortar less block which as lugs on the inside of the block to keep it from moving while the wet concrete is poured into the blocks to give the wall its strength and rigidity.
Crib Masonry Retaining Walls
Crib Masonry Retaining Walls Have their own place in the retaining wall market they are as strong and durable as a Core Filled Besser Block Wall
and can be built higher than a Besser Block Wall and can be constructed in most circumstances cheaper than a Besser block Wall but there are some constraints, a large foot print is required so this is not recommended for areas that space is at a premium but the come into their own when the wall gets over 3.8 meters in height.
